On one of my visits home many years ago, I was amazed to see that wonderful old symbol of permanence, the Old Town Hall, in the Market Place, looking as though it were being built from a construction kit. I cannot remember the year, but I notice that a car in the picture has a registration number beginning with GCU which was in use from 1961 through to 1967, which may give a rough indication.
Apparently, when restoration was being discussed, there were some who would rather have had it demolished, considering the money required as being 'wasted'. Perhaps they would have preferred to see it replaced with buildings similar to lovely examples of 1960's architecture that can be seen in the background.
