Currys/Dixons on King St.

Post by christopherchance »

Hello

Can anyone tell me when the Currys (originally next to where Thortons and Game are) was opened, was it always there or did Currys have a different premesis on King St. at any time?

the same goes for the Dixons (now Currys Digital) store further up.

I asked my Dad, who is 67 this year, but being a retired employee from Northern Electric (AKA NEEB) he hadnt ever really shopped at either of the Currys or Dixons stores except in the 80's when he had to buy computers for me or my sister.

on the facebook south shields photos group, theres various shots of king st throughout the years but the shop fronts never seem clear enough to tell.
theres photos of the Dixons building from early 1900s and it was called The Avenue Hotel and later than that it was a photographic shop, but its unclear as to whether this was Dixons.

the Currys shop is now Babez clothes store and was next to the Electricity Board showroom.

my memory of these 2 stores only really goes back as far as about the early 80's and BBC/Acorn computers!

anybody got any further info?

.
I can remember Currys being down the road from Rumbelows in the late 70's...

Comet would have been a lot later I think.
