Another article taken from the Sunday Sun July 23rd 1944, How much the appearance of the new Merchant Navy Club in South Shields is welcomed and how strong the appreciation of the Mechant Navy itself apparent by the speaker when the club was offically opened yesterday by Captain D. S. Tennant general secretary of the Navigating and Engineer Officers Union and Mr Charles Jarman acting secretary of the National Union of Seamen. It is most fitting that the town should have one of the best Merchant Navy clubs in Britain said the Mayor of South Shields (Councillor R. H. Noble) just thought a bit more history of our town.
