There is still a St Lawrence Church in Centenary Avenue, its on the right hand side coming from Prince Edward Road just after the council yard.

I don't know where you looked, I checked and it said Church of England on a few sites.

St Lawrence the Martyr, 84 Centenary Avenue, South Shields, Church of England.
It only took less than a minute to google it.

The Catholic Church at Horsley Hill is fairly new, but St Lawrence The Martyr
C of E in Centenary Avenue goes back to before 1947 (or so I believe) but I think
it would have been fairly new at that time.

The New St. Lawrence church was built around 1980. It replaced the ramshackle giant tin hut that preceded it.

We Harton Junior Boys used to have a helluva time climbing over the fence when we tried to retrieve our footballs we accidentally kicked over the very large and intimidating fence between our school and the churches vast overgrown waste land. This was in the mid to late sixties.

I left Shields in 1965 so most things which happened after that were
missed by me.
