The address shown says Westoe which according to my old map covers the area between what is now Beach Road and Westoe Bridges. Westoe Village is marked as the village. There is also South Westoe which covers from Crossgate to Victoria Road. The Census of that period had my ancesters living in South Westoe. So I think that keeps us guessing as to where is actually was. As for the guy I have no idea, any connection with Marshall Wallis of the Road named Marshall Wallis??

I have grave doubts about authenticity of envelope.

Penny Black is upside down.

I not sure then but up to about thirty years ago Post Office would refuse to send mail if stamp was upside down.

It was considered an insult to the crown.

William Wallis was the grandson of Robert Wallis who opened a shipyard in South Shields in 1720, by 1847 the Wallis family were in partnership with Thomas Marshall and built their first ironclad ship "the Conside", and now you know where Marshall Wallis Road got it's name!

There was also a Wallis Street which ran from Barrington Street to Coronation Street, not sure if it is still listed as such.
