top of lizard lane

Post by bamboo »

i,ve been doing quite a bit work in a house at the top of lizard lane.its the house directly to your right
on the crest of the hill.the owners told me-in their cellar there is a blocked up tunnel
that used to lead down to the bay which was used by smugglers back in the day.
anyone else heard such tales or were they spinning me a yarn ?

just thought i,d add.it,s the best house i,ve had the pleasure of working in
and i,ve been in my fair share

Sounds like Marsden Hall to me. It was owned by the NCB for many years and was used as offices until the late 60s. During the war a detachment of US soldiers were billeted there, they used to man the searchlights and decoy lights on the golf course and Cleadon Hills to confuse the German bombers to drop their bombs there instead of South Shields. Have never heard of a smugglers tunnel there, the only rumoured smugglers tunnel I can remember talk of was at Salmons Hall on the velvet beds. Just before you go up the hill to Marsden Hall under the road is a sealed tunnel that was used for the railway line into old Marsden quarry, that was bricked up in the 50s and the railway cutting filled in.

Anna are you not getting mixed up with the old post office on the Coast Road opposite Souter Lighthouse, that stood empty for years before it was converted into a house.

I remember the railway tunnel under the road and the railway line, Marsden Hall is quite high and quite a distance from the cliffs so it would have to be some tunnel
I voted leave

It was the best place in the world to grow up in, we had the beach and the hills on our doorstep, mind I think I would have ended up a nervous wreck worrying that my lads would do what we used to do as kids.

I'm the same Anna....loved living there for the first 24 years of my life.

And I wouldn't mind getting back there one day myself.
