I can just see the scene in the Eagles Nest in Baveria.

Hitler, Himmler, Georing, Hess and Geobles are all standing looking out of the window.

(A phone rings)

Hitler answers it

(Silence while he listens)

(puts phone down)

"Got in himmel"

"That vos der Abwher, they haft just found out that a certain Baldy Schmidt hast been born in Sud Shields"

"Ve must invade Poland and while There attention ist distracted ve must try andkidnap him or ve are doomed"

(Sits down with head in hands sobbing)

Yes, they had me pegged as well. I wouldn't mind but my father never tried to stop the Germans, he was too busy fighting japs in Burma. So it was left to good old mum to save me.

There's nothing more frightening that a mum protecting her brood.

No wonder the Germans lost.

Good job the Germans didn't bomb the chippy in Marshall Wallis Road. For my money it was the best around. One of my mates lived number 97 and my uncle George lived at 109 so we were frequent visitors in the area.

Their prices in the 50s used to puzzle me 4d for a bag in the winter months but 6d in the summer. Apparently it was down to the new potatoes in the summer and the price would return to 4d in the autmn. It wouldn't happen these days.

We used to pay 3d for fish and chips, 1d for the chips and 2d for the fish. I don't remember any seasonal changes in the price. We bought ours in Laygate Lane chippy not far from the High Shields Station.

My dad was a trawlerman when he was young. If we were ever given Sweet William when we'd asked for Cod he made us take it back and get it changed. He called it dog fish and said it was a scavenger and ate any old rubbish.

I moved down south and my future wife and her family thought a fish called Rock Salmon was delicious. Turned out to be what I knew as Sweet William when I told them what it was they didn't eat it again.
