Grammar School

Post by jeff »

In my wife's gradfather's obituary (Shields Gazette Feb 1955) there is mention of him attending The Grammar School in Romilly Street (this would probably have been in the mid 1880's).
Try as I may I have not been able to locate such an establishment through any of the usual search channels.
Can anyone throw any light on this for me?

My 1894 map of shields has no mention of a Grammer School on Romilly Street, there is a Sunday School shown on the corner of Romilly Street and Broughton Road also a school one street away but it would be on Westoe Lane not Romilly Steet.

The unamed school on WestoeRoad/Lane is where the Co-op Emporium was built
in about 1950. Later it became council offices.

If the entrance to the school was not on Westoe Road and was behind it, the address
would have been Back Romilly Street. That was where goods delivered to the Co-op
were always addressed.

I remember those council offices, where a lot of the buses would stop.
What's the building being used as these days ?

Interestingly, the co-op also had a funeral parlour on the opposite side of the road.

The building is now refurbished offices. They are empty and offered for rental. Bit of a bad time economy wise. The Co-op funeral parlour is still over the road.

I now have a map 1896 (not the repro 1895 Alan Godfrey edition) which shows the Grammar School next to the Westoe Baptist Chapel as mentioned by a couple of members. Does anyone have a photograph or point me to a likely site where there might be one please?

The School was behind the white hoarding. In the background is the Town Hall. Photo 1939

LOL! I wonder what that bloke is doing amid the rafters on the uncovered roof of the school.

These buildings must have been knocked down shortly after this pic - were they bombed, does anyone know?
