Who filled you with fear at school

Post by martymont »

My fear was a visit from the nit nurse and taken a letter home and the schoolboard coming to your house and asking were you were they were terrifying, because of the trouble you got when you got home, the b******s only came to your house when you were at school

The horrible toilets. When I started school in 1949 there were outdoor earth closet type toilets. We didn't get indoor plumbing until several years later.

Fat Will - aka Billy Egner, Headmaster of the Boys Grammar-Tech, was the only teacher there I was really wary off.
Most of the others, like Jimmy "Ginboy" Emerson, Harry "The Rat" Wake, Ken Slater, and Ken "Zoony" Smith, were more of a laugh than fearsome. Some of the older teachers, like Mr Souter, Basher Grey and Mr Thompson were more frightening.

We had a teacher called Mrs Gray and she dressed head to toe in grey, grey skirt, grey blouse, grey tights, grey shoes.

She used to take us for reading and if you got a word wrong she slapped you legs with a ruler, she was horrid.

Colin Driver and less often his older brother Mickey.
These 2 terrorised the neighbourhood (The Nook or Nookside as it was known back in those days)
and most of the town as the stereotype skinheads, Dr Martins, skinny jeans and braces etc.
Think of early Slade and Noddy Holder and yer get a good idea of how they looked.

I don't even know if they went to my school (Cleadon Park) or not (a few years older than me).
But for some reason, they had a habit of frequently showing up and always created havoc.

Ha-ha! Colin and Mickey Driver were sweethearts!!! LOL
They went to St. Cuthbert's - Colin was in my year. This was before I got smart and passed the 13+!!
We were more afraid of Keith and Kevin Kent.

I thought we were talking about teachers - but if we're going to include bullies, then the list would be quite long!
There's a few of 'em I'd like to meet today, as I owe them a few knuckle sandwiches!!
And I'm just dying to pay out!!!!

In Whiteleas, the biggest families to watch out for were the Ford's and the Fada's.
Although Decca Deardon once hoofed me in the goolies and smacked my nose 'cos he felt like it!!!
