You don't hear of them these days because their branch lines were closed down during and since the "Beeching" days.malaymac wrote: What I particularly liked about this map was the large number of 'little' places which hardly get a mention these days such as Middleton St George,
Cotherstone, Brampton in Cumbria and some of the lovely little places in Northumberland (England's best kept secret).

Re: picture location
Well done Brian and isn't it great to see the old Sheels station again.
I can remember going over that footbridge, many times.
That brings back a few memories.

well done brian, i didn't think i would see it again, its facinating to see all the old lines there were, one that always interests me is the waskeley line that went from rowley to stanhope which was reputed to be the highest line in the uk.

Re: picture location
The tiled map was preserved, can remember pictures of it being removed in one piece and laid on a pallet. Will most probably be at York or Beamish in storage.
Can anyone remember the red stamping machine on the station platform, you could stamp your name on a thin aluminion strip.

Last year I took my Malaysian missus to York and we really enjoyed our time there. In fact, the railway museum was far better thsn we expected.Jarrow Pete wrote:The tiled map was preserved, can remember pictures of it being removed in one piece and laid on a pallet. If you get a chance to go there, I highly recommend it with so many interesting things to see, even if like me, you did not have a big interest in railways.
Re: picture location
If I'm not mistaken the tiled map is on display in the museum at Shields.

Only know that she's been a member of the boards for two years, butcaptain beefheart wrote:so who is west harton lass ??????
it's very rare she posts. Have seen her name appear regularly at the
bottom of the index page where it shows members who are logged on.
