Re: great old video of the tyne ferry
It was great to see the old ferry again. I have about 10,000 or more of old photos of Shields and about 2000 new photos. I run a photo deposit club to try and encourage people to take photos of the town and store them in one place for our future generations to see. Or they can deposit them in the library archives. I do not have a camcorder but I think videos are better than still pictures. all my pictures are referenced with all the details of each photo recorded. This will be my legacy to the town for what's it's worth.

Re: great old video of the tyne ferry
A very nice video showing scenes of todays ferry and from a few years ago.
It's interesting to see just how busy the old ferry was with foot paasengers and cars.
And in the background, 4 tugs lined up. There also seems to be a large tanker in Brigham & Cowans.
Looking at the river these days, it's sometimes difficult to imagine just how busy it used to be.

I used to use the Penny ferry a bit more direct in crossing the tyne.

Re: great old video of the tyne ferry
I will look into it jimmy. the photos I am taking now I have given copies to the local history section of the library for the future. I am a great believer in our generation leaving something for the next generation. the town is cahnging that fast that if you take a photo today tomorrow it could be history. I know a lot of people take photos on this site. My advice would be to reference them and do a write up on each photo. I am sure the keen photographers do this but I believe everybody should. These photos could be valuable in the future. I share copyright on mine with my son and daughter as I will be long dead before the photos become antique.jimmywizz wrote:comeonthen as your are a member of here you can also post photos into our gallery at

Great photo Edd,
If I remember rightly these vessels collected coal from the Mill Dam (the staiths) and took it down to Batterea power station.
Apart from the ships shown in your photo, there was also the Betty Surtees.
Re: great old video of the tyne ferry
I think the collier on the right would be used to take coal from thr low staithes to Battersea, Fulham and Lots Road power stations.
They were called flatirons on account of their low upperworks and folding funnels that allowed them to sail under the low Thames bridges.

Malaymac, there is still a Betty Surtees sailing from the Tyne, it takes s**t from Howden sewerage works to the treatment tank farm in Hendon Dock on the Wear. Its not advisable to be in the vicinity of it when it is discharging into the tanks.malaymac wrote:Great photo Edd,

Wouldn't have thought you'd have noticed the difference in Sunderland

But the product originated from the inhabitants of Newcastle and surrounding districts, they were/are
