We had our first tv a Sobell model from Rentaset in 58 and it was 5 shillings a week, I can remember as I had to go down to Fowler Street every Saturday on my bike to pay it.
The first tv in the street was your old next door neighbours the Irwins, can remember us kids been invited in to sit on the floor to watch the coronation.

The lower photo, mark 11, is very similar to my dads car, except his was sky blue on top with cream underneath.
Can still remember the reg. no. WUP 924.
It probably only did about 20 mpg, (on a good day). Another strange thing were those long 'bench' type seats.
About 8 of us inside and not a single seat belt !!!

i recall the barber shop on the corner of chi road it was run by harry moffet and his wife she use to make socks etc. upstairs lived my nanna and granda cook
(jack and lizzy) then there were the ramsays who kept greyhounds.the pie shop on john clay street may have been kieths then there was southern's butchers
and dougy oliver's fruit shop.back in marsden st. there was an antique shop owned by mr. leslie who was my teacher at barnes rd. school. i was born in the
house adjacent to the shop in stainton st in 1951

There was a great chippie on Moffett street, and an old offie on Stainton/John Clay.
The chippie was still there in the late 80's.

if you were born in stephenson street did you ever know any of the sim family or the judson family or the anderson family from that street who also went to canada

there were sim and judson families in shakespeare street and also marsden street ,i am related to some of the turnbulls that lived round there as well

Sorry, Shadow, I don't know the Sim, Judson or Anderson families from that area.
I was only 8 months old when we moved to Whiteleas.
However, the Andersons may be the same Andersons that moved to Whiteleas at around the same time.
I remember Paul Anderson. He was a couple of years younger than me, but had two brothers who were older.
They lived in Turner Avenue.

I only came to Canada 12 years ago, and haven't really connected with any Sanddancer emigrees as yet.

I can still remember several families from this era but sadly none of the names you are looking for. I rememeber the Barches who lived at the bottom of Marsden Street towards Chi Road; The Jaggers and the Lillies from Harold Street and the Carricks, Walshes, Cheesemans and the famous piano teacher Gertie Ochleford all on Chi Road, smashin times.

Not sure if this would be about your time, but was there a family called Musgrove living near the Cypress ?
I can't quite remember, but they may have had a corner shop nearby.

that name rings no bells , one of my judsons worked in the cyprus tho ,another was a cabinet maker but i cant think where round chi or laygate he would have worked

I remember Maurice Musgrove, who used to clean windows in the area, then eventually moved to Green Lane area.
We used to call him "Mushy".
He'd occasionally do handyman stints in the local pubs.
