Interesting statue, anna.
Is that statue in honour of the same person as your other, Dolly Peel statue?
Please excuse the ignorance here but I don't know your N-E history that well.

I love the old photo-I wonder what happened to the little boy who was looking at the statue. What a hard time he had ahead of him-he may have had to go to the first world war and if he made it through that, he had the depression in the 30's and then another war. :(

He lived in 'interesting times' as they say.

This is not the same "Dolly" as the "Dolly Peel" at South Shields.

As Anna says the Dolly depicted shows a fisherwoman with her creel.

Dolly Peel of South Shields was a publican and a smuggler.

I remember seeing the "Dolly" in the photo many years ago, but it
was in very poor condition then. I believe the pub it is alongside is
still there. It was between the Ferry Landing and the Fish Quay. I
used to pass it quite often back in those days.

Anna just phoned my 86 year old mother and she reckons it was a shortened version of Dorothy.

I think he would have been a tad we bit young Sherri to have been in the First World War. As by the look of him I would say he would be six or seven years old in that photo. And from the date given there was another seven years to go before the war started. But you never know as so many of them lied about their age to get into the forces.

Your calculatons are wrong Global.

Photo taken in 1902, as clearly stated above the photo.

You reckon the lad to be about seven years old. (I think he's a bit older)

That means he was born in 1895.

So at the outbreak of WWI in 1914 he would have been at least 19 years old.

My error was I wrote seven for some reason instead of twelve years and subsequently my whole sums were out by five years..

In that case he would have been 24 years old at the outbreak of WWI.

I expect an email with a personal apology to me, for pointing out your error.

The first World War was 1914-18 so if that photo was taken in 1902 it was taken 12 years before the war and if he was 6 in 1902 in twelve years time he would have been only 18 in 1914.

Say you were right about his age, although I think he is quite a bit older, kids were
a lot smaller in those days compared with today.

Working on your claim that he is six years old, making him 18 at the outbreak of the war in 1914,
he would have been able to join the forces without any problems, and when the war finished he would
have been 22 years old. So you saying that he was "a tad to young to fight in WWI" is way off the mark.
is it not?

I quite understand your reluctance to admit that you got it wrong, I suffer from the same ailment.

But of course the chances are that he didn't see 20 let alone the end of the war.

I remember when we were kids, going to Tynemouth, we would pass the 'Wooden Dolly' pub near the Fish Quay. There was a dilapidated wooden statue of Dolly outside. We believed if you took a bit of the wood, it was a lucky charm. It must have been a widely held belief, because there was great hollows in it where people had chipped bits off! The statue was replaced with a new one some years later.
