Ten more pictures from the past

Post by hartman045 »

Bobby Elwell leads the Mariners out at Simonside Hall. c1970 ish

Image

Young codger at the Lawe Top. 1955. The Lookout Fort in the distance and Lawe Ho to the right. Why oh why was that historic pile bulldozed?

Image

Another 1950s Burndept social evening. Winnie Tinnion centre and Peggy Brown to her left.

Image

An older codger on the Marine Park lake in 1966. These strange paddle boats replaced the motorised 'scooter' boats. Fairground left and in the distance , the coal washer.

Image

A duo colored print from 1969. Photo taken at the Look Out Fort, Lawe Top. The model, Janet was 16 and worked in the office at the Crompton Parkinson factory in River Drive. Five years late I turned pro, Our studio was in Cullercoats. The coloring of this print was achieved after hours of trial and error, dodgy chemicals and wasted photographic paper. Today I can do it in Photoshop in 2 or three minutes.
Image

Another production line image taken at the Burndept No 2 factory in Station Rd. Late 1940s probably.

Image

c1955-56. Burndept social evening. Second from the left my mother. Next to her my then girlfriend Dorothy Bennett and then myself. I do know the lady on the exreme left and the one at the front (may be Waggot) but their names have gone

Image

Early 1970s Sportsweek Parade Jazz Band. Pics like this were good source of income for me as a budding photographer

Image

Mid 1950s. Trolley buses at the Pier Head.

Image

And last....phew! I took this snap from my favoutite place, the ferry landing. Late evening snap a busy river boats/ships as far as the eye can see. c1980s
Caer Urfa in the foreground (the old Saxon name for the town)

Great pics Hartman, they really take you back - I was at Vidor 70/71 in the research & development dept., under Derek Brown? If memory serves, I think that was his name.
I also recall I had a good farewell party, I think in the harbour lights pub, up the bank from the riverside factory. :)

i think the houses you can see are the ones that used to be leading to the pier head and what looks like the washer tower is near the northern edge of the fair ground.

I don't think this is the Marine Park ???

Is the Washer not look to narrow ( the top box section ) ?

Can't find any photos of the washer so will have to use good old YouTube.

PKUqH7z59zQ

Do you see what I mean ?

There's also something behind the trees beside the washer but can't make it out.

And if it isn't The Marine Park....where could it be ?

Small point I know but the tower is the Crown shaft winder at Westoe pit.
I think like Pilot says the houses are the ones just past the Majestic heading for the Pier. The "tower must be something in the fairground, if it was the Crown winder in the picture you would have seen the boat landing and the model boat club house.

yep i thought the picture was strange but i have now sussed it, the buildings where the houses next door to the quasar, the top of the thing that looks like westoe pit is infact the top of the old crane that worked on the pier

Like Axeman I am now getting confused, if as I thought the houses were next to Quasar, would you not have the Sea Hotel in the picture?

Yeah Jimmy thats seems like a more feasible view.

BUT where's the Sea Hotel ?

I've been using Google Earth to get angles etc ( sad bug*er ) and the pier is too far to the right !

Have a look

I would have thought the crane was to far down the pier to be seen above the trees in marine park.

Jimmy you are right. I have looked at the original negative scan and the little path you can see leads out on to the road opposite where Quasar is now. What I thought was the coal washer is in fact somekind of structure on the pier. #-o (as pilot said) Senior moment again. Sorry chaps. Although it has provoked a sensible debate........ :)

Ahh well done Jimmy

The OTHER crane the one in the yard full of the marked up stone blocks for the pier.

Hartmans right, that did spark a full blown investigation.

Maybe we should ask the Police to send us they unsolved crimes.
