The WW2 pillbox on Blackberry Hills. I used to play around here when I was a kid. It was a disgrace when this was demolished.

Heron St. c1932. My family moved from this street in the early 1930s to the newly built Cleadon Park Estate.

I don't know Anna. I used to hang around the derelict stadium in the late 60s, so I must have taken some pictures. They will be in my negative files if I have any. If I come across any I will post them.

Oh No !!!!!

I used to play on Blackberry hills all the time.

I was gutted when there dug it up and built that crap looking estate there.

Can you remember the old Farmhouse that was there ?. Where the Nursery School was built.

But OH NO to the Pillbox.

I was about 5yrs old when some kid up the street locked me inside. He had put a boulder up against the metal door.

Pretended to try and get me out through the window, then said he would get help, but never came back.

Day turned to night and a thunderstorm had started......my sister says she had looked in there but it was too dark to see.

She heard my whimpering and found me huddled in the corner.

Thanks Hartman, I'll not sleep for weeks now..... :D

Only joking, but true story.

I'm glad you printed it. Is it OK for me to take a copy ?

Just off the coast road between Horsley Hill and Marsden. At the bottom of them was the smallest railway station in Britain on the rattlers route, Marsden Halt. Across the lines and coast road you had Salmons Hall on the Lees.

It was a bit ramshackle though !

I can remember how the wall around it slowly disappeared collapsed over the years.

mainly due to us kids !

I spent all my life from birth until I was 24 in Cumberland Place.

So have got great fond memories of everywhere around that area, the leas, the hills.

It strange, even now, when I have dreams I'm almost always in that area/house at some point.

Used the hills to go tracking on our bikes, cowhorn handlebars, no brakes etc....great.

And do you know....I can't remember anything with the police being involved....well once.?

What the hells happened.

Used to walk over Blackberry Hills four times a day going to school and coming home at dinnertime. Odd occasions used to jump on the back of the rattler for a ride to Marsden jumping off at the bridge over Redwell lane. The bus fare was 1/2d per journey so used to have 2d a day for sweets.

I remember when we used to hide in the long grass near to Marsden Station.

Rumour was the driver of the Rattler had a shotgun and would shoot at any kids that tried to hitch a ride....

Has this been mentioned before....I think it has.

About the kid that lost his legs riding on the Rattler.

Yes to everyone who wants a copy of any photograph. I took them, and own the negatives and therefore copyright. What better place to share than this site.
Yes we used to get 'set on' when we played there. My worst nightmare was the playground near Harton Dyeworks.
and all the 'funny' looking people who inhabited the Victorian streets of Shields. Rickets was rife, cross eyes, bow legs, limbs missing due to the war. The thing that scare you when you are a kid eh! I would not under anycircumstances walk up Woodbine Street or the back of Fowler St. In that street opposite the Town Hall( a bit of it is still there) there was a family who used to sit on the steps outside their house and they were all cross eyed, AND they had BIG HEADS! I was terrified of them.

My dad used to use it to go to Whitburn Pit.
