Looking at the illustration of the ragged looking boy it looks as if the period it is depicting was the Charles D1ckens era.

Anna, I can remember the name Carr Elison from when I was a kid 1940/50s, wasn't he big-wig at county level? I remember his name cropping up and being mentioned a lot by teachers, so he must have been someone of influence.

Thats what should be given to kids today when they don't behave a GOOD THRASHING And then put them in the army for six months to learn respect and discipline.

Couldn't agree more, "Spare the rod, spoil the child". I remember we got wacked something rotten if we put a foot out of line when I was a kid - it was the norm, and you knew what to expect. I think the PC brigade, and human rights lot threw the bairn out with the bath-water, and now we're all suffering the consequenses

Respect and discipline used to be taught at home and continued through your schooldays. Now mothers are at work full time and kids are left to fend for them selves and school discipline is just non existent. Bring back the old days.

If anyone has read 'Tough Times and Grisly Crimes' by Nigel Green.

You'll see my grandfather in there. George Carrington. He got the birch for stealing drink etc when he was a little un.

Quite interesting read.

Tough times for sure....

The National C.E.T.S. was the Church of England Temperance Society.

The Police Court Mission, was a charity which took in hand and cared for young offenders, later
they became "reform schools".

It went through various changes and stages from it's birth in the 1800s. It has eventually become
what is now known as the Rainier Foundation. It is 200 years since it all started off through
The Philanthropic Society in London. It is now an International charity helping you offender
into a normal life.

"“It is a rule almost without exception that the boy has been left untaught and uncared for - has been the subject of much ill-treatment and neglect - and that the gentler influences of a mother’s care and the comforts of an honest and happy home have been unknown to him.”

extract from a Society report, 1848"
