Re: Tyne Dock Arches & The Venus
thats a great photo Brian, just about where we used to hang out, I will be an anorak now, the pulling engine used to be the most powerful steamer built by BR, the 9F, the one on this route was called Evening Star, the 9F was the last steam train operating in UK I believe based on the west coast line at Carlisle or near by.
Did anyone go to Tile Sheds to watch the engines when they were young

Have a great video of the iron ore trains, it follows the train from Tyne Dock to Consett. The Evening Star was the last steam loco built for British Rail.
Re: Tyne Dock Arches & The Venus
my granda was a shunter on that line for many years
Re: Tyne Dock Arches & The Venus
I had a great uncle who was an engine driver at Tyne Dock and another who was a goods guard.
Re: Tyne Dock Arches & The Venus
I think it was the Braemar that had the fire mid North Sea, as stated they built another Blenheim but not the Braemar as it would be considered unlucky.

I used to set my alarm for 5.30, I made sure i got up had my breakfast, cleaned out the ashes from the coal fire thro on the paper sticks made the night before, then raced upstairs to the attic window and waited for the count down to the first blast, then on the second day was repeated, and so on. Then off to school, I wonder if that makes me an old codger....lol

There was an article about the Leda in "Cookson Country" in the Shields Gazette
the other day. Seems she changed her name several times.

I did a trip to Bergen and back on the Leda in 1970, I remember it was a winter crossing and very bad weather on the way out, it was great fun watching people go green in the bar.

Had a similar experiance on the North sea ferry going to zeebrugge. Ferry was chartered by ministry of defence, so a few hundred blokes sitting in the bar during rough weather put a very large dish on the floor waiting for the weather and alcohol to take its toll of wich it did. To the loud shouts of huey from everyone else. =D> =D>Pilot wrote:I did a trip to Bergen and back on the Leda in 1970, I remember it was a winter crossing and very bad weather on the way out, it was great fun watching people go green in the bar.

Re: Tyne Dock Arches & The Venus
Funny that. After we'd pigged out at Wright's biccies (see a previous post), we'd sneak along the railway lines, hiding behind the coal wagons, to get the the top of the arches. This was in the '70's, so I don't think all of the arches were safe enough to hold trains at that time, only the two middle ones were still working.
I know the offices were derelict, as that was where we'd hang out. At one place, there was a trap door where you could stick your head through and almost touch the tops of the Northern buses. Of course, if we'd fallen through the bug*er, we'd have had a whole s**t load of other problems to deal with - if we'd survived!!
We must've been nuts!
