Evans lemonade

My old mother (97) has developed a retro taste for the lemonade of her and my youth - Evans. The bottles had some sort of plastic 'cork' with a rubber ring round it. And the shape of a hand embossed on the top.

The upper half of the bottle was sort of (small) pebbly. They did Ice Cream Soda; Sarsparilla; Dandelion and Burdock (mmm) as well.

Does anyone know where/if it can be found today?

At a pinch Villa might do.

She's been fed Schweppes, Whites, Sainsburys and 'Victorian Lemonade' and that stuff with bits in. Doesn't like them.

Evans went years ago, my friend's older brother used to drive one of their lorries. Their drinks were very good and I was surprised at their demise.

I used to sell Villa pop from my van. We used to get a weekly delivery, but in the summer when we ran out of supplies we used to drive to the factory and bring a load back with us. Those were the days when you had to pay a deposit on the bottles (3p) which was included in the price.

I remember those flavours well, Jerry. I used to look foreward to going to my aunty Mary's who lived in the street parralel with Boldon Lane (forgot the name). There was a corner shop that sold Evans Sasparilla, Dandylion and Cream Soda. We couldnt get them in the wilds of Primrose!

Anybody remeber NEDS? North Eastern Direct Supply I think it stood for. They used to deliver drinks round the streets but they weren't a patch on Evans.

Your question reminded me. Did you Like New Zealand have those soft drink bottles that had a marble inside the neck. The theory was the gas would cause the marble to rise up and block the gas from escaping and thus keep the fizz in the drink. They are a expensive collectors item today. But unknowingly as a kid I used to break the bottle to get the marble out whenever I found one of them.

You bring back happy memories of Evans pop. I remember the screw bottle with the hand embossed on the top. I have never tasted pop like it.

Being brought up in a teetotal house (made up for it since mind) all family have big glass of Evans lemonade with Sunday Dinner. If I remember it was a faint green colour.

I remember Papa Maplin when we had to drink Villa pop instead he say nice but not as good.

I was thinking about it the other day.

WHO HAS GOT RECIPE FOR EVANS LEMONADE.

Someone must have it.

This lemonade thread reminds me of a true story from a few years back. Apparently, someone took what he/she thought was an old roman coin into the museum at the roman fort and the coin was said by the experts to be a genuine roman coin. It turned out that a kid visiting the fort saw the "coin" on display and said that it was one of a set which were given away lodged into the top of the pop bottle tops ! Red faces all round !.

cheers.

We used to get, Dandelion & Burdock, American Cream Soda and Cherryade from the corner shop, as no one delivered in those days. We only ever drank pop with our Sunday dinner (lunch).

I can't remember Treetop, nor can my sister who knows about these things.

Thanks all for your comments on Evans superlative pop. After a hundred tries, we've got me Mam a substitute - Barr's - which can be found in local small shops in the NE. She thinks it's 'all right'.

"Creamola Foam, fizzes and foams, foams and fizzes, fizzes and foams "

Something like that.

I've just come across a bit of information about Evans pop whilst digging around some archives.

In 1914 George E Evans produced mineral water etc. at Back Winchester Street, South Shields.
