my second posting on this topic, I too went there swimming from mortimer road school, 1 penny each way for the bus I think
There was a police officer allowed to swim in his clothes for his training in rescue (I think) I was in awe as how he swam very fast, cutting thru the water like a fish he would do quite a few laps, then get out and changed, never said a word to any one.you all take care now.
G,day from down under, I am an expat from s.s. many years ago, this is a great site keep the good work up Matt

I used to go to the baths from Mortimer. If it was a dry day we used to walk, escorted by Mr Atkinson (p.e teacher) and if it was raining we got the bus, I don't know who payed the bus fare, it certainly wasn't us pupils.

I used to go to Derby Street from Westoe. After the session we'd all troop up to the chippie on Westoe Road, (on the same side as Derby Street, a couple of blocks closer to the bridges), then go to the bakers right by Westoe Bridges to get a stottie cake, hollow the stottie out and stuff it full of the chips, or was that with the money me mam gave me for school dinners

Either way we used to get stottie cakes from the bakers. I cannot remember if we always got chips or just if it was when the shop was open, either last session in the morning or first in the afternoons when it would have been open anyway.

Mr Dodds was the teacher that took us to the baths.

The swimming instructor was Tony Mordue, and we had his son in our class, or maybe it was the year below us - it was 35+ years ago - Gods I didn't realise just how old I've become until I worked that out OMG!!!

My swimming instructor in 1950 was George (Geordie) Mordue!

So Norm, are you sure it was Tony, if so; maybe they were related.

Actually thinking about it, Tony might have been the son, though I don't recall the name Geordie, but we were a little afraid of him so weren't on first name terms if you get my drift.

I used to be in the lifeguards for a season, and he was there for their training sessions as well.
