Mobile Shop Van

Post by andysfootball »

Can anyone remember them ?

My only memory is one that used to do the rounds and visit Marion Way in the mid to late 60's.

You used to walk up stairs at the back.

The one in Frederick St belonged to a bloke called Tommy Taskas who owned the general dealers shop.He took it round the outlying estates at Gateshead.

Where there's muck there's money and that old mobile shop made a fortune.
I first came across the word 'minger' in the early 70s. It was used to describe small children. As in ....a houseful of mingers.

Can anyone in Marsden remember ' Georges Bus '

At first it was a old single decker bus that was turned into a mobile shop. Then he must of made enough to buy a bright yellow Bedford Lorry.

I'm not sure how far he went with it, but he was always on time and stopped in the street. Always had customers waiting when he got there.

In Jarrow the butchers shop at the corner of Albert Road and Bede Burn Road still use a van as a shop.

I can't remember their name but I expect Jarrow Pete will know

I remember a few of those.
Woodley used to have a blue Commer van that you entered from the back.
There was another one (Duncan's) that was like a big grey schoolbus, you entered from the side. "What time is it? Ha'past cheese by Duncan's bacon, two eggs slow!"
Thompsons, on Dean Road, had a green one, that used to also deliver our "order" on a Friday afternoon.

Also, can anyone remember the Co-Op bread van. The one that used to visit Whiteleas was like a covered electric milk float.

Was he the one who had no fingers, we used to pinch the peas in the pods from the back of the van. Tot was once on the wireless describing how he saw a plane crash into the sea off Whitburn.

It's a pitty theve shut as they used to produce beautiful black pudding.

I always used to buy a great lump of it when I was in Jarrow.
