We live on Lake Erie, so the summers are spent at home.
In the winter we spend five months in Panama where it's also nice and hot.
Hell will freeze over before we would consider going anywhere cold.

But hell freezes over for you 7 months of the year!

Sounds like you need to move to Panama or Nicaragua if you want some cheap real estate!

We live in the "Banana Belt" of Canada and are completely south of several US states.
Central America is right now in the rainy season which is why we come back to our summer here.
There might be some parts of Canada in which hell might freeze over for 7 months of the year but we don't live there.
Why would I buy a house in Panama when I can rent one and if I get tired of it, I can move to somewhere else.
The biggest problem I have with renting is finding someone reliable to look after the car I bought down there.
Car rentals are expensive down there, because the local drivers should really have been Kamikaze pilots, but in the middle of our last stay down there, I broke even with the rental cost and now I have something to show for the money.
One more slight disadvantage is that while we get a tourist visa which lasts for 6 months, your drivers licence is only valid for 3 months.
To get around this, you have to leave the country for 3 days to re qualify.
We have done this by going to Costa Rica and staying at variously a resort, a cottage in the mountains and a surfer area.
Next year we have a tentative booking to fly to Aruba for a couple of weeks.

In the 1960's and a young man, I was in the Merchant Navy, often starting a voyage at Montreal, calling at ports down the Eastern Coast of the US, passing through Panama on my way to Australia and New Zealand. We would often stop for a few hours at Cristobal and to get ashore for an hour or two was a great treat. It seemed very exotic to us and of course transiting the canal never ceased to impress.

Funnily enough, while we have spent more than a year of our lives in Panama,we have only seen the Canal from the air as we arrive at or fly from the airport at Panama City.
We then have to catch a connecting flight to David (pronounced Daveed) airport where we are about an hours drive from the condo we rent in a small seven unit complex.
No wild night life as everyone is retired, but still lots of laughs and the ability to go wherever or whenever to wherever the urge takes you.

Panama sparks another memory of an event a few years ago when in the North of England, a Prison Officer went out to sea in his kayak and failed to return. Believed to have died, his insurance company paid out. The truth was rather different, he was in fact very much alive and living quietly at home in a concealed room in his house. His carefully planned retirement fell apart when he and his wife were photographed viewing an apartment in Panama, which the company then used in an advertising campaign. Someone who knew of his supposed death reported it, turning his dream into a nightmare. :D

I remember that one.
How he and his wife could do that to their children is difficult to comprehend.
Even though he was deeply in debt as a result of failed property investments.
From reports I saw, he seemed unable to understand why his son refused to have anything more to do with him.

Yes, it was all very weird, at first I thought how in this day and age, unless you have a vast amount of money how can anyone just hope to disappear? Having said that, way back in 1919, my own great grandfather walked out one day and was never seen or heard from again. He remained an enduring mystery to our family until a few years ago, my cousin, using all the tools of the Internet eventually found him. He had taken up with another woman and they sailed from Liverpool that year bound for Canada. They ended their days in Toronto, he dying in 1938 and the woman he had bigamously married dying the following year. He never tried to contact any member of his family, including his own siblings - how difficult that must be. My mother alone who was born the year he disappeared was still alive to learn the truth.

Hey Max ... long time no chat.

No holidays per se for me this year

had to cancel my holidays in October(my usual Facing Island trip) because of ongoing health issues

been off work since February

have 3 stuffed discs in lumbar area - one herniated and was compressing the sciatic nerve

had a surgery in March ... just started recovery and developed a kidney(*one got one)stone which saw me at the local A&E at 3 am in the morning then later on air ambulanced to Brisbane ... for it's removal ..... home another 2 weeks and then it was back to Brisbane with this disc/sciatic
problem for a caudal epidural spinal injection ... still recuperating 3 weeks later but things have slowly improved

back to Brisbane next week for assessment.

It's been a real saga.
