Most of us are 'conditioned' almost from birth, to control our temper, always be reasonable, make complaints through the correct channels and accept the judgements of courts, tribunals etc. Nothing wrong with any of that and that's how civilized society keeps working. But, we must have all at some time have felt a burning sense of injustice over the actions of others, felt the need to 'shorten' the process and deliver an unmistakeable message.
Example: A protester once threw and egg at John Prescott MP, who instantly punched his assailant on the nose. Wrong? Of course, but the alternative of trying to find the assailant later, involve the police, a couple of lawyers, Magistrates, possibly the Probation Service and maybe the miscreant several months later is simply warned that should he do something like that in future there may be serious consequences...
No doubt the man making the impromptu adjustments to the new Travel Lodge will be punished by 'the system', but I should think that the satisfaction he felt during his rampage will last for many years.
