I never got the chance to visit the Falklands, but I have vivid memories during the Falklands War, of gathering with workmates each day around the TV to watch the news - and very depressing it was at times. One of the Captains from Port Line (my old company) Captain North, was killed in action on 'Atlantic Conveyor', while the son of one of my work colleagues went on to become Deputy Governor of the Falklands for a while. The closest I came to the horror it must have been: One day while standing in Victoria Station, the heroic Simon Weston CBE, who suffered such awul burns during the conflict passed by, a reminder that wars carry with them, a terrible price.

We should have given them back to Argentina year's ago so we should.

Gib to Spain also.

England's domination is absolutely worth less now.

We acquired our Colonies when attitudes were very different and we were no different from the other major powers in those times. The problem is: our smaller colonies and territories are usually inhabited by people who like the arrangements they have and don't want to be 'handed back'. The other is: Spain who constantly demands Gibraltar back, shows no signs of wanting to vacate its colonies on the North African Coast, nor the others it still retains around the world. A good many of the people in Argentina laying claim to the Falklands, have names and a language that denotes them as the descendants of the Spanish colonists who violently took possession of the land from the indigenous natives. Sorry Whip, your view is just that - a view - but too simplistic by half.

Simplistic or not.

No war's, no dead people, no heartache's etc etc.

Just give them back the land we once grabbed by being damn greedy.

Money wasted which could have been put to better use so it could.

Living in the past never achieved anything.

You have told us that you used to be in the Army? I take it you must have been dragged in by National Service, for I certainly cannot imagine that you went in of your own free will. :D

i enlisted for the Forces.

Saw a bit of skirmish and realised what weapon's can do.

Grew to dislike war's and weapon's.

For sure I used them, as I was trained to do so.

I can boast that no one got killed or injured whilst any weapon's was in my hand's :D

Well one thing is for sure, the Services are not for eveyone. I'm sure that our men and women are as good as any in the world and they have to go where sent and follow orders, but it is inevitable that many must have had grave doubts about some of the operations in which they took part. The families of those that lost their lives, for example in the second war with Iraq, the legitimacy of which is now widely questioned, must at times feel very bitter.

Whip if the residents of the Falkland Islands wished to become part of Argentina Britain wouldn't step in their way... They don't and didn't wish to be invaded. Same as Gibraltar. They wish to remain part of Britain. Isn't this what democracy is all about.

For sure they wanted to remain.

i do believe rightly or wrongly the Falkland island's belonged to Argentina ?.

There fore ,what right have Britain to claim them as their own.

Same applies for Gibralter.

The brits got booted out of America and left India, say no more.

Whip The Falkland Islands. I believe we were ceded them by Spain....... Long before there was a country called Argentina........ We were there first. That's why there are British people on the Falkland Islands.

Quite so Memor. It should be remembered that the Government of Argentina under General Galtieri was not democratic and the people of Argentina subsequently sentenced many of its members to long terms of imprisonment for brutal crimes against humanity.

Then you had best tell the Argentinians that as it was their cynical 'land-grab' that started it. Muggers like to attack the weak, exhibit weakness and you make yourself a prime candidate to be mugged.
