US and Russia - relations worsen

Post by ralph » Sat Sep 02, 2017 11:16 am

The US has warned Russia that today, 2nd September, US security forces intend to raid and search the recently closed Russian Consulate in San Francisco, and that will inlude the staff quarters in the building i.e. people who have diplomatic immunity.

It is common belief if not knowledge, that the diplomatic staff of all countries to some degree work for the intelligence departments of their own countries, but to take this sort of action in peace time must be rare if not unprecendented. This t*t for tat behaviour started when just before President Obama left office and he expelled over 30 Russian diplomats.

It is believed by some that this latest threat is aimed not so much at Russia, but is a way of trying to increase the pressure to get rid of President Trump.

Will the raid go ahead? Will they find anything incriminating - or will we be told that evidence of Russian wrongdoing has been found (but as usual) we cannot disclose it for security reasons.

Ralph...it gets even worse:

The State Department announced Thursday that it would require Russia to close the San Francisco Consulate General, as well as annexes in Washington and New York, in response to enforced staff cuts at the US mission in Russia.

"Russia will no longer be permitted to use these facilities for diplomatic, consular or residential purposes," a State Department official told CNN on Friday. "Public operations at the consulate in San Francisco must cease by September 2."

"The facilities will be closed and entry or access to the properties will be granted only with permission of the Department of State. The State Department will secure and maintain the properties in keeping with our responsibilities," the official said.

The consulate in SF was first believed that it was on fire.....Black smoke billowing from it. It was later determined that the consulate was not on fire, but a lot of smoke came out of the chimney.

Apparently, the Russians had a lot of documents to hide ad were burning them in the consulate's fireplace.

I suppose that if the situation was reversed and this was happening to US diplomatic premises in Russia, there would be a similar response in getting rid of sensitive documents.

Clearly the bottom of this downturn in relations has not yet been reached. Further complications may turn out to be that Russia may start using its veto again in the UN which in an attempt to be conciliatory, it had stopped doing. That should be interesting as there has been a dramatic upping of the ante in North Korea, which I will mention in the other thread.
