Motoring in Oz

Post by jeff » Tue Jun 27, 2017 10:06 am

Among my post this morning, together with birthday cards, came a nice letter from Victoria Police notifying me of a speeding infringement on 12th April on the A1 Princes Highway.

Recorded speed of 114kph (modified to 110 to allow for tolerance in the detecting equipment) in a 100kph zone.

Rather ironic as in the early part of our holiday I was pulled over by the NSW Traffic Police for driving below the maximum speed limit (75kph in a 100kph zone) on the same A1 Princes Highway. This is the main coastal highway between Melbourne and Sydney.

The Traffic Officer was very polite and explained that in the event I was holding up traffic and likely to cause irritation to those who were keen to get a move on, possible tailgating me, and in the event that a roo jumped out in front of me not only would I hit the roo but the traffic following would hit me! OK, good enough reason to go onto the side roads to take advantage of the views across the countryside. Point taken!

Although the Princes Highway is a major route the traffic levels are nowhere near as heavy as in this country and I did find it difficult at times to keep within the speed limits, as they seem to change with monotonous frequency for no obvious reason. Having said that there are abundant signs to warn of particular hazards along the way , and much of the topography is like a switchback.

So I will have to take the rap and pay up- 311AUD (about £180). :(

That's really bad news, Jeff. You've been back for quite a while now so that fine would have come as a bit of a shock.
You're not wrong about speeds changing with monotonous regularity for no obvious reason.
There have been complaints here about some roads having 3 or so different speed limits in a couple of km.

Oh and I hope that apart from that, you had an excellent birthday! :D

Jeff pay it and you'll have no problems coming back.

The trouble is, if he doesn't pay within the time given, the size of the fine multiplies massively and eventually could result in a court summons/jail sentence being given in absentia-and I'd say Jeff would want to keep his options open about coming back.

Most people don't want criminal proceedings hanging over them, max.
A speeding fine is a civil matter, debts are a civil matter. But if things proceed to a court summons/sentence it can be quite another matter. It's worth knowing. If you've ever read any of Jeff's posts, you would realise he has family over here. Even if he has no plans at all to ever return here, he probably needs to at least keep the option open.
I didn't think your comment made for the best possible advice in the circumstances.

Whatever. :?

Good choice though. The new one is better & on track. I agree, the fines are to help with revenue. The govt would be lost without their fine money.

Incorrect spelling tends to become a obstacle when I am astroplaning.
