Plans have been unveiled for a multi-million pound munitions plant on the site of a former Wearside tyre factory.
Sunderland Council is considering a BAE Systems plan to switch production from its existing site in Gateshead to the former Dunlop factory in Washington.
BAE's Gateshead plant has been operating since 1916 and employs about 300 people.
BAE wants to bulldoze the former Dunlop factory and build a new 35,250 sq m (8.7 acre) facility.
The news comes after BAE Systems signed a 15-year deal with the Ministry of Defence (MoD) to supply the UK armed forces with small arms and medium-calibre ammunition.
A detailed planning application is to be submitted to the council later.
