Backgate Hill
Backgate Hill, South Shields, circa 1880s.
Is anyone in here old enough to shine any light on it? Anybody know which area of South Shields it was in?
I'm about to go look at some old maps, back later.

Do you remember Doris Johnson from the local history section of the library. Sadly she died a couple of weeks ago. she was a very nice person and would help anybody with anything. I think she was a bit more relaxed with the rules than the others.Fenella wrote:ask keith or ann in the local studies part of central library theyve got a lot of old local maps down there , i miss that place

She was short about 5ft 2ins and large with old fashioned round glasses and looked the very part of an old fashioned librarian.Fenella wrote:was she the short lady with the bum bag or the grey haired one ? i cant remember

Re: Backgate Hill
I remember when I was writing my book and had to study the old newspapers on the fiche. some I could not make out because of the way they had been put onto microfilm. When I asked to look at the originals I was always told that they were too delicate. Doris never refused me and would always let me look at the originals. She was a great help. I missed her when she retired.
