War in Iraq

Post by Infectedmushroom » Tue May 18, 2004 2:40 pm

Should our troops pull out of Iraq and let themselves blow up their own country?

Opinions would be greatly appreciated cheers.

I don't think there is any point in trying to establish a democracy in Iraq, or anywhere else in the Middle East.

They're not democrats, they're theocrats; they're happiest dancing around, waving a sword, and shouting God is great!

We need all our resources to sort out our own problems.

Cherry P: Arab states are ill-prepared for democracy, they're behind us in development, and all that.

You sound like one of those old Victorians who talked like that when he wished to extend the Empire : "Gad, we have to bring them civilisation, don't we, old boy?"

You're just an imperialist!

JonnyRudeboy:

I was merely struck by the resemblance between Cherry's patronising attitude - "give them time and they'll be just like us" - and the Imperial attitude - "Give them our rule, and they'll be just like us."

Do extremes meet sometimes?

P.S. How's life in the Twilight Zone?

Cherry P> Yes, I agree that we should let them have a fundamentalist islamic state if they want one; as I say, they're happiest that way. (Well, they'd have to be, or why would they want islamic state anyway?)

It's that I don't want to hear the same people who wish them the freedom to choose such a state start howling when that state shoves women into bhurkas, executes homosexuals, tortures dissidents, hounds writers, etc., or hear them complaining that we should "do something about it".

P.S. Any thoughts on the Salman Rushdie matter?

Sorry this poll has now been closed because Saddam has been executed by firing squad.
How was a totally inorganic world able to create organic life? Answer it couldn't and didn't
