Jarrow Arches

Post by mareserg »

For those of you who remember the Jarrow Arches!

I heard that someone had been hanged right there at the Arches.........before my time for sure! I'm thinking it was around the early 1900's or late 1800's.........but may be wrong.
Good reason for people to be scared going through there on foot in the dark. It was spooky!!!!!!!!!!

Yes I remember the Jarra arches!! I was about 19 and worked at Edmund Robsons in 1970.
I used to live in South Shields and go to Redwell in 1962 - 65. My maiden name is Carol Brown if anyone remembers me please email me. I'd love to hear from you.

Yes they were called Tyne Dock arches, at least in my day. My dad has got a piece of one of them in his garden.

William Jopling

Post by Barney »

Hi Y'All;

William Jopling was one of the last people to be gibbeted, and he was hung at the Jarrow/Simonside end of where the Tyne Dock arches would be built, if my history of the area is correct. He hung there for a while, until his body disappeared one night. This was circa 1830's, so a bit before my time!

Is this what you were thinking about?
