I left Redwell in 1978 and 3 years later joined the RAF and left.

Twenty two years later I decided there wasn't anywhere in this country to live that's better than Shields so I came back. No regrets so far.

My auntie lived in Falstone, Yvonne Brown as was, she's 4 years older than me but went to cleadon. Maybe you know her.

hi gibbo i remember her now.. we lived in falstone ave and they lived just around the corner think yvonne is about 50 is could be wrong it mite be linda i no one of them went to school(cleadon park) with my older sister jean the rest of us went to redwell.

Quite a diference don't you agree.
I am in the unfortunate position of being one of the older people on the school boards so have little chance of contributing to the topics raised by pupils who were there some 25 years after me. My sister was at Redwell and she left around 1957 and she is still in touch with some of her schoolfriends. She see's some of them on a regular basis even though she lives in the south of the country, a few of them moved to the same place as her.

I went to Redwell till it closed.

The only ones I remember are Mr. Frasier, somebody who was called "penguin", Mr. Flannagan.

I know their were others, but I can't remember.

(I went to Mortimer when redwell closed)

Thanks for that, baldy. Yes, I suppose the difference with Mortimer is the likes of memor, you, me and others caring enough to make contributions. Your sister is in an enviable position of still being in touch with school friends. I'm not. Would've loved it. I can clearly remember a lot of my Morty mates. I seem to have relocated so many times, reinventing myself as I go along, all my friends are fairly relatively new....hey, but they're good, which is all that counts.

I went to Redwell, it only had one decent teacher in the whole school,
Mrs Anderson, only teacher I really liked.
Jonah Johnson was as mad as they come but good maths teacher.
Then you had the total b*stards like hamma hamilton and ginger Roberts,
bigheaded pricks.

I can remember Martin Boyack, Keith Dalton and teachers, Ginger Roberts
Eiwob, Polly Parker the art teacher, Mr Roberts the woodwork teacher, Hammer the Puff. Used to knock around with Doug & Stu Bell, Raymond Elliott (Smelly). Also played in the 1st XV from 1964-1967.

Yeah I remember Polly stewart, Fred Goodall the woodwork teacher, Mrs Anderson, Pancho Freeman the PE teacher and others.

But the man who as a real professional and caring teacher helped me out on the road to life.

Mr Anderson the geography teacher.

It was 1970ish and the time to either leave school or stay on.

I was 15 and didn't have a clue what I wanted to do, what apprenticeship to go for ( we had them then ) or stay on at school.?????

Then one day it was on me like a ton of bricks.

Mr Anderson finished his lesson one fine day by saying:-

"Right, I need to know who's staying on and who's leaving?"

Then proceded to call out names and write down the reply.

When he got to me he got the obvious reply of " I don't know".

Now you would of though something like " OK stay back, we'll have a talk " type statement would have been made.

Nope!

With a big bang on the desk with his fist, he shouted " Come on boy make your mind up, staying or going? "

"Going sir "

The rest is history.......

Teachers sometimes come across as over paid morons who really hate kids.

No wonder they have such a bad time.

We look up our road in 1881 census. It quite amazing nearly everyone in our Road, to make ends meet had a Lodger.

You never guess what Lodgers Profession was ?

Yes Teacher ! The reason was Teachers were the lowest of the low.

Their pay was terrible, thats why they live in lodgings. They not afford anything else.

Now they still lowest of the low but with better wages.

There is this saying it goes.

"THOSE WHO CAN, DO. THOSE WHO CAN'T, TEACH"

I remember Fred Goodall he was our woodwork teacher, he would use a leather strap to whack you instead of a cane like the rest of them.

axeman you mention hammer the puff, what I remember of him was he was always trying to get off with the school secretary until her husband the metal work teacher caught him and whacked him one. His mate ginger Roberts was a sleaze bag as well. They were both at a school reunion I went to about 15 years ago.
Martin Boyack I remember, he was on the comittee of the Whitburn Club, (but we'll not go into that) his father is a councillor.
The Bells, one of them used to get in the Marsden Inn Dougie I think.
Smelly Elliot, last time I seen him was in the Cleadon Club over 30 years ago. These people are all younger than me.

I never mentioned Hammer the puff that was Badlad.

But Fred was great. I remember one kid ( bit of a swot ) making this quite good version of a ship, sails, rigging the lot.

A kid called Phil Nyberg was winding Fred up, who ended up chasing him around the class.

He couldn't catch him, so ended up throwing this swots ship at him........ smashed all over the place.

Hey if you got in the Cleadon Club, do you know some of my old mates, Richie Newbrook, Graham Fry. Billy Binks, Alan Bertram, Reggie Bertram ?

That was my dads haunt as well as the betting shop behind it.

Before I got any jobs after leaving school, I worked with my then girlfriend on a hotdog van outside the Cleadon Club.

Steward tried all ways to get rid of us. I think my speciality of curry burgers was pinching his pie trade
