Are people from South Shields Geordies?

Are people from South Shields Geordies?
Now I was always told when growing up that a true Geordie is someone born within 1 mile of the banks of the Tyne but by that definition some parts of Newcastle is further and I know people from South Shields are labelled Sanddancers but I'm not Arab-descended so by no means a 'Sanddancer' and don't like the term at all and South Shields is closer to Newcastle than Sunderland main centre.
Opinions?
Who is a Geordie?

A gruff no nonsence sort of people.
That invented the Pizza.
Who think their beer is best (yuk, yuk,, sticks fingers down throat)
Will stick with you through and through especially if they think you have money you can lend them.
The back bone of the British Army.
And they're the ones who'd you want standing next to you when your in trouble and the chips are down.
Geordies are different. Any group of people that can race whippets grow leaks with a passion and wear flat caps for a bet are gods own people (if there were a god)
Should I go on or just continue embarrassing myself.

Just be proud to be a sandancer I am and the answer is NO were better.

Re: Are people from South Shields Geordies?
There is an argument to say people from Newcastle are not Geordie's, one suggestion for the origin of the title is that King George was beaten back south of the Tyne by the Scots and raised a local army to reinforce his ranks from the local people south of the Tyne. These people were called Geordies Men
I voted leave

I'm still right about having no taste buds when it comes to North East beer.
Why they think that Scottish and Newcastle is great beer confounds me.

Re: Are people from South Shields Geordies?
Anyone born n raised in South Shields is classed as a "sand dancer" but it's more of a jokey nickname than a real label. I'm proud to be known as a "sand dancer" but regard myself as a geordie. My accent is geordie and I've always worked with geordies as well as "mackems" and "smoggies".
Overall I'd say South Shields belongs to the geordie family, Sunderland is known as "mackem land" with locals who are proud to be known as "mackems" yet when abroad you alwayts here them telling people they're "geordies" which is funny
Football plays a major part in it too with Shields being 50/50 or there abouts and causes some major rivalry with some saddos taking it too far! I find that if I'm out the region chatting with people, some regard us "sandies" as mackems and others say we're geordies so I can't see it ever being resolved.
So in summary I'm a proud sand dancer but overall am also a proud geordie (toon fan too for me sins

Re: Are people from South Shields Geordies?
I consider myself both a Geordie and a Sanddancer. Not sure if Stephenson Street is within a mile of the Tyne, but I don't give a crap anyways!
When I was a teenager, there was a lot of "Geordies Rule" T-shirts about, with folks from places like Hartlepool and Stockton claiming to be Geordie!!
You know - "I'm from Hartlepool! Geordies Rule!" I thought that was stretching it somewhat, but if they wanted to improve themselves by claiming to be Geordie, I can't blame 'em!
In reality - like being Cockney - it's more about how you feel about a place than where you were physically born. If you're proud to be a Geordie, you're a Geordie. If you're proud to be a Sanddancer, you're a Sanddancer. If you're not proud of those things, then you will most likely not claim to be either.
Anyway - I'm from South Shields! Geordies Rule!
AND, because "we're all together, like the folks o' Shields!", I'm a Sanddancer, too.
