Lovely, CJ.

The 13th century East wall of Tynemouth Priory (Photos 1 and 5) is in Nikolaus Pevsner's 'Best Buildings of England'.

Beautiful photos.
I was wondering. Parts of the building have obviously come tumbling down at some stage. Was it just old age that caused that, or was it ever damaged in battle or war?
If it is just old age, then how safe is the rest of the structure and how often is safety assessed?

Beautiful snaps, CJ. The stained glass windows are stunning.

I'll say this for you Brits, you really built things to last.

The stained glass isn't from the Priory. I imagine it's from Holy Saviour Church in Tynemouth (c 1840). It's good quality, some of it by William Wailes of Gateshead (who built Saltwell Towers).

Edward I (the baddie in Braveheart) considered Tynemouth one of the strongest castles in the Northern Marches (Borders). His queen, and that of his son Edward II, used to stay there while their husbands campaigned in Scotland.

Christopher Marlowe's play Edward II has the king fleeing by ship from Tynemouth after the catastrophic battle of Bannockburn in 1314.

LOVELY PHOTOS.

Whenever you see photos of ancient buildings like those, even if they are in a state of ruin And then when you consider the modern days builders have massive mechanical equipment as an aid to the building of their edifices. You can only but deeply admire the builders of yesterday who had no such mechanical means available as we know of it to assist them.

Aye Global its a wonder maybe they used what the Egyptians used to build the pyramids.
No steel tools not sure if they had pulleys but they had one thing that would make the biggest difference in the world.
With this they could build the greatest buildings in the World and I just rediscovered it.
If the building industry start to use it they could have buiilt Wembley stadium in a year and they could build the whole of the Olympics in eighteen months.
Of course I am referring to
