Joan Baez at the Sage

Post by Pilot »

We went to see Joan Baez at the Sage last night, she was absolutely brilliant 1hr 45mins none stop to a sell out audience, mostly of people my age 50s and 60s who no doubt remember her in her protest days in the 1960s. Brought back great memories of my days in CND and anti Vietnam war protests, she was hated by some in USA for her protests against the war and her fight for equal rights for blacks before it became popular. if you like folk music try to go to see her you wont be disappointed, she also had good things to say about the acoustics at the Sage, she said it was state of the art and second to none Worldwide.

You a folkie, Pilot?!
If so, what do you think of the Show Of Hands song Roots, which I've proposed as a new anthem? ( viewtopic.php?t=10919 )

I listened to it a few days ago when you first posted it padlock man, I thought it was good, quite stirring. I started going to the folk club in Shields in 1963 when it was in the back room of the Beacon and kept going till 1973 by which time it was upstairs in the Marsden Inn on a Sunday night. when I was at college in Liverpool in the 1960s we used to go to quite a few venues including one which the Spinners used to sing before they became really famous. Beer, girls and a good old sing along, bliss. 8)

Thanks for the review Pilot as I am an old folkie ( or should that be fogey) too. As for the song that Padlock is touting as a new national anthem it isn't stirring enough or catchy enough. Having said that it's not a bad song but not anthem material.
Pilot a young friend of mine appeared on a recent TV programme with Joan Baez. I stress young because he was asking me what songs she was famous for. I said ask her about Bob Dylsn and he didn't understand so I had to explain the neture of their relationship and their falling out.The youth of today!!!

Delilahcat, lets just say she has lived life to the full. She did a great Bob Dylan take off in one of her songs last night. For all her fame she appears to stay close to her beliefs as a young woman and I admire her for that, so many people get a little wealth and turn their backs on their roots, like one or two who post here, I hope it never happens to me. 8)

Pilot you mention the Marsden Inn folk club had got going by about 1973.

I remember the folk club there in the early sixties, though I'm not big fan of folk I was upstairs on a Sunday night a few times in them days.

Mind I'm a big fan of Bob Dylan and always have been from day one.

Sorry Cisco, its the way I wrote it, I remember the first time I went it was in the Beacon 1963, Jimmy Irvine was boss hand, around 1964 it moved to the Marsden Inn upstairs on a Sunday night, I kept going till my son was born in 1973. I was at sea from 1968 to 1974 so could only go when I was on leave those years.

Well, it's nice to find a few old folkies staggering around the place.

But why am I not surprised that Delilahcat shouldn't like the idea of Roots as an anthem?

Had some good nights in there Pilot, it was a good atmosphere and very friendly.
I did'nt know Dylan was coming to the Sage, I'll give them a ring.
I phoned about tickets for The Who, they wanted £60, I find that scandalous seeing there's only two of them left, that was at the arena.

Our tickets last night were £30 each, my wife got them for me around October, they were supposed to be a surprise but I took a call before Xmas from the Sage wanting to change our seat numbers for some reason, I didn't know what she was talking about, so my wife had to explain. She had meant to put the tickets in my sock for Xmas.
