The pub at the top of Mile End Road was the Beehive. It used to be a men only bar before equal opportunitys put an end to that sort of thing - in pubs anyway.
I think Turks Head was a kind of knot used by seafarers but it was a popular name for an inn or pub dating back to the crusades- for obvious reasons.

tonnee, what is your problem? I have noticed (as I'm sure many others have also) that every time Delilahcat makes a post you jump in with a negative. I do not always agree with her myself, but that is no excuse for jumping in like you do. If you don't have anything constructive to say. Then SAY NOWT.
what
Ok then baldy tell me now what equal rights has to do with pubs at the lawe top.
you use the word negative well every thread that someone starts what
do we get a load of left wing crap.
Is there no durham sites you can bore people with

I was trying to be helpful to the guy who asked the question. Telling him the name of the pub at the top of Mile End Road. I added the bit about the men only bar to see if it would jog his memory and added the bit about equal opportunities in case he was of the generation that didn't remember men only bars. There was no hidden left wing agenda.
Tonnee you have a real problem. I think you scan the boards for my posts so you can be abusive. It's not big and it's not clever.

I have received a pm from tonnee asking me to answer his questions in one of his posts above. Had he written something worthy of an answer I would have obliged. It seems he has appointed himself as the person who should decide what people should write about in their posts and takes offence when people decide not to oblige. Responses from other board members should indicate what others feel about him. He complains about delilahcat going off the thread when all she did was add some additional information, he then took it upon himself to criticise her for doing so. This is not in the spirit of the boards. I note that during this thread he has not made any constructive post, come to think of it I don't think I have seen a constructive post on any board from him. I think he is also narked because of the non response he got on his post on Curly's board "Vote" as for me finding boards in Durham, I'd like to point out that I have been on these boards a lot longer than him and I'll still be on long after he has left them.

Pleased the information was of some use. Yes the pubs are still there. Sadly not some of the Landlords. I don't know if you knew Ralph Brown who had the Turks Head, The Simonside Arms and latterly ( I think) The Lookout. He has just died age 61.
My sister inlaw Audrey Pattison used to be barmaid at the Lookout in the mid seventies but that may have been before your time
