Re: Horsley Hill Stadium
I remember playing there as a scout from Brownsea Hall (Hoo-ray the 22nd) in the mid 1970's, and it was derelict then. Had some interesting experiences with a lass from Mowbray Road there in 1976, and it was a field full of rubble and weeds at that time, so my penn'orth is demolished 1975/76. Couldn...

http://i110.photobucket.com/albums/n102/Pilot_04/Whiteleas.jpg There is mention of the old Smallpox hospital at Whiteleas before the modern estate was built. Thanks to the Shields gazette for the cutting. Was there a shop at that house on the corner of the Gazette pic "Gibbons" (Andy Gibb...

Re: Cleadon Park CS School for Rusty
Hi hartman045. Excellent site, well done. My dad's family lived at 46 Park Avenue from the late '30's to the late 60's. We used to get fish and chips from the Park Lane chippie after football matches at the Rec - smashin! =P~ =P~ They don't have fish like that these days - so hot and fresh and BIG! ...

Re: burger bar
I remember the Wimpy's in Mile End Road.
Later, when I moved down to London, I used to enjoy the International Grill at the Wimpy's on Mill Hill Broadway on north London.
Was run by a family from Turkey. This was the early '80's. Good times.

Re: I never heard of St Custards ?
Hi sanders. Yup, I still play the ol' Bolan quite a bit. 8) Was just listening to Bolan Boogie on the long drive home this evening. =D> =D> =D> I left before Vashonovsky and Sultman. I remember Mr McNally, and Mr Swales. He was great, Mr Swales. Gave me a good appreciation for English, he did. I rem...

Re: I never heard of St Custards ?
Welcome aboard sanders. Yep, good times. Jolly ol' rubber neck. Mr Johnson - what a tosser. Alan Smith nearly caned the hands of me one time, when I bust a round b*****d file and it stuck in the blackboard next to his head!!! And then Mr Todd was always inviting you to join the red hand gang. Do you...

Hey - I spent a couple of years at Custards, and I'll rip the sack off anyone that calls me a coward!
Glad I escaped the place, though!
Don't think Mrs Reader had ever heard of deodorant!!!

Re: Easington Colliery
Hi heaintheavy. Perhaps I am being a bit unfair. I forgot that the "hills" of Temple Memorial Park in Whiteleas are actually landscaped slagheaps we used to play on as kids!! However, there should be some kind of memorial for these places - a lot of people lost their lives down the...

Re: Easington Colliery
Hi heaintheavy, thanks for the update, but my issues are still valid. First of all - I did not mention Westoe in my original post, but, anyway, it's kind of difficult to to "look" from thousands of miles away in Canada, and even the satellite images don't make anything clear. I am glad tha...

Easington Colliery
Just watched the Secret Millionaire episode about Easington. It was nice to see that, even in a tiny place like that, they'd put a monument on the spot of the pit shaft where the colliery used to be. Not like Shields - no relics or markers of any kind at Harton, Boldon or Whitburn. Did they leave an...

We used to get Fentiman's Ginger Beer from the truck on Saturday's, for Sunday dinner.
Never had Ginger Beer like it since.
It used to come in porcelain jugs. And it was actually alcoholic.
My dad stopped buying it for us when he found that out!

Hi marc77. Yup, it's always good to bump into a Marc fan every now and then. And I do miss keeping up with the Bolan news over here. Luckily, my friend Sos (curly knows him) keeps me up to speed on a lot of things. Hard to believe it's 32 years now. Gadzooks! Still pee'd off over what Elton did with...

Aye, montymart, I remember those bonty nights well. There were bald patches on that field in front of our houses for years - until coonsil went and built oap's bungalows on it!! Ah yes, happy days, stuffing bangers in the letter boxes at Whiteleas Way shops, because they made such a huge bang in the...

Sorry to change the subject slightly but OMG , I have just seen your signature Barney! :o KOTMC is my all time fave song ever! Never expected to see it here :D Hi marc77 With a handle like that, it's easy to figure you're a big Bolan fan. My nickname for a long time was Barney Bolanoid, and I, too,...

Re: Good Old Binns
I used to work in the kitchens upstairs making the sweets and the tea and coffee back in the early 60s. Miss Kinnear was the kitchen supervisor she used to let me wash the lettuce which was a privileged job as finding a Caterpillar in your salad was considered bad form Welcome aboard, Mr Bimble. Yo...
