Keith Bell who I have known since I was 14 is the biggest heap of s**t to walk the streets of South Shields. He fancied himself as a hardman even in his youth and when he got older he had to surround himself with young thugs to protect himself from the many who wished to give him a deserved good hidi...

Wasn't there concrete gun emplacements on the lease.I think they were filled in and covered to make like a small hill . There was three naval coastal defence guns on the cliff tops. You can still see the hillock that was created when they removed the guns and filled in the emplacements. There was t...

When I started work at Whitburn Pit in 1961 I was warned by my father and others not to go into the old abandoned workings in the old Bensham seam. We young ones when left alone would often venture into the old workings looking for fossils etc. I was told a miner had gotten lost in the old workings ...

My father worked on them. Came home from the war, started work as a points lad, then a conductor, a trolley bus driver, and finally a motor bus driver. He worked for Shields Corporation for 27 years. I used to take his billy can full of hot tea and meet the bus at the top of our street to give it t...

Bought my first furniture from there when we set up home in 1963. It cost £100 for a three piece suite and £95 for a dining room suite which was quite expensive in those days. Paid £100 for our first of many 3 pieces from Woodhouse in King Street in 1973. When you consider that the average tradesma...

I left Shields in the late 60's. Just browsing and came across this excellent site. My Gran was from originally from Tyne Dock but lived up at the Nook. She still went down to Frederick Street every Saturday morning for her shopping and I remember our weekly visit to Poretta's for a savoury dip. Dr...
