Andy We usually stay in Bude. Not quite au fait with the pub situation but there are a few there in the town centre and also the villages around. It was built around 1891/2 as the Colonial Bank Hotel.
I've found a wonderful web site "walkingmelbourne" giving a fascinating pictorial history of that city. Thats where this info came from.

Line from Sydney to Adelaide does not go through Bendigo. Maybe it was Bathurst or Broken Hill?

There is a Vic Lines rail service from Melbourne to Bendigo.
