Re: Old Shopkeepers Remembered !

Not so very old Markofpity. Just joined Sandancers and came across your post. I used to serve in that shop as a junior assistant and the manageress was Lilian Ritson, who was quite elderly then, (c 1964). The shop was called Vernon's Price Down run by the Moores Group. I remember "The penny box", j...

Re: Photography

That's great Danet, thanks for taking the time to give a comprehensive response to my questions. I have been looking at some of the advice etc on Youtube and I now believe that the beginners courses at hotels etc may not be for me. You're right about the jargon mind, it seems photography has a langu...

Re: Poor Jimmy

Apparently, the Grey Hen was only closed briefly following a bit of a mix-up with the new management. It is reported to be open again but the Sima Arms is supposedly still closed and awaiting a new manager.

Re: tour de france yorkshire.

I noticed them all cycling through Howarth where much of The Railway Children movie was made. I do believe at one point they all cycled up a steep cobbled street. It looked like a massive Hovis advert.

Photography

I realise it's been some time since anyone posted on this thread but here's hoping someone will offer advice.... For some time I've fancied photography as a hobby but I'm now thinking of taking the step and having a bash. Trouble is, I have no idea what's involved and I'm guessing that simply buying...

Re: Shut Up !!!!!

I'm not totally sure what or who we need to defend against. Sure there's always a terrorist threat and we must have military resources of some kind but it seems to me that since WW2 the UK has not had to defend itself from anything or anyone and any skirmishes we have had have been at our own instig...

Re: my daughter jasmine

I assume you mean the lights adjacent to Tesco. If so, it's incredible that someone would perform such a stupid manoeuvre and I'm pleased she was ok. As a local to that area, I know there has been many accidents around there over the years especially at the entrance to the Bede Trading Estate.

Re: Poor Jimmy

Haven't heard anything yet but the pub is owned by the same company that own the Sima Arms. They are known to be in serious financial trouble and they closed The Clock in Hebburn a while back.

Re: What grinds your gears ?

The driving theme seems popular so here's a "gear grinder" of mine... I live on a busy road with a 30mph speed limit. Being in Co Durham, there are no fixed speed camera's but quite often the mobile camera van parks close to my house and makes an absolute killing as very few drivers adhere to the 30...

1. Top flight footballers
2. People who engage you in conversation for the sole purpose of telling you all about them but have no interest in you
3. Jeremy Clarkson
4. All politicians
5. Reality TV and all those involved

Re: World Cup

I agree and I don't watch even on terrestrial TV. I find I just get angry watching footballers cheat and behave like nasty spoiled little children. I do like to bet on football and when I do then I try to watch the game but every time I do I last about 15 minutes then I have to turn it off as I'm si...

My old local and for many years I was in there just about every night. I'm sad it's struggling and like many pubs it seems to be heading towards the inevitable.

Re: Argos

I've had issues like this with Argos in the past and a couple of things to note... 1. If you give them your number for delivery purposes then that's all they should use it for. I have done this several times and they have not used the number for anything else. I've made it clear to Argos that sales ...

That makes sense. Looking at similar pubs that have closed, many of them end up as Chinese or Indian restaurants. The pub is about the right size for that.

Well Mr Smith, looking at some of the locations shown on the right, I guess you and I aren't exactly adventurous in our travels although I had a fortnight in Majorca in 1983!!!

Re: The Dock pub

I drove past last week and there were men in suits with clipboards taking pictures and measurements. I heard from a friend that it was for sale quite cheaply as it has limited use and permission was unlikely to be gained for anything residential so it is likely to become either a pub again or more l...
