South Shields Merchant Seamen losses WWII

Just out of curiosity, on the anniversary of the loss of a family member, I was wondering if anyone else here in South Shields lost anyone in the sinking of the Canadian merchantman SS Taber Park which went down steaming from the Tyne to London on 13th March 1945. I presume that the ship crewed up a...

Re: South Shields folk working in the yards Narrow escapes.

Hi all, Honestly, you go off for a camera up yer a*** and return to all hell let loose. Roll on cancer... :D Let me try to calm the waters on what was hoped to be a simple light humoured post which would generate some historical interest for future generations into our once proud declining British I...

Re: South Shields folk working in the yards Narrow escapes.

Good story. My husband was a shipwright and worked at most of the Yards. Had a whole host of stories. The lad who claimed to be a pacifist and demanded to be excused working on a warship. The lad who had the top of his head sliced off 'like a boiled egg' when the corrugated metal shed roof hit him....

Re: Evans lemonade

Corbett St? Think you may mean Corbridge St which was near John Forster's shop. Might well be Delilah, its some time ago (62/4), and I haven't an old map to check and memories not what it was after all this time... The street used to run toward the river and one side of it the pavement was built up...

South Shields folk working in the yards Narrow escapes.

Though I'd be a good idea to share this story now as it might clear up what happened for many of my fellow townsfolk; and those from Jarrow and Hebburn who heard it happen....and also to the families who's dinners where probably ruined...  The IRA attack on HMS Cardiff...Just to clarify...

Re: Villa

I used to sell Villa pop from my van. We used to get a weekly delivery, but in the summer when we ran out of supplies we used to drive to the factory and bring a load back with us. Those were the days when you had to pay a deposit on the bottles (3p) which was included in the price. 8) I remember V...

Re: Anyone remember me?

Thank you Mr. Smith. It seems there are lots who 'drop in' only occasionally and the lack of replies to enquiries detracts from the sites usefullness at times. The forum is a font of knowledge in all honesty. If it isn't noted and kept on here, many memories and insights of South Shields life will b...

West Park & Stanhope Road School trips

Whilst at Stanhope Road (later West Park in 1974 for a short time), there were school trips to the Cairngorm Mountain range in Scotland organised by Mr Dale/McDonald Mrs Ellis (& in 74 Mr McNaughton). The original lads only trip in 1968 (I think) was in primative conditions in the old war time Norwe...
