Re: Up The Creek Without a Paddle

Found another link. It's as I suspected. The figures are approximates, no one really seems to know exactly, with estimates from 10-60 million for Stalin. But he is right up there with the worst, wiping out the equivalent to the whole population of Australia. It said this: (list of genocidal leaders ...

Re: Up The Creek Without a Paddle

Stalin was just as bad, that's very true. I was reading an interesting book review about the numbers killed by both regimes. http://www.nybooks.com/articles/2011/03/10/hitler-vs-stalin-who-killed-more/ It claims that the numbers killed by Stalin were revised down once the west had access to records ...

Re: Up The Creek Without a Paddle

Most probably true of any group of people, Ralph. :D
I was quoting what I read one German Jew write about his experience during the war & how he and his neighbours felt at the time.
I don't suppose they had much choice though.

Re: A little tour of Hamilton Island

Small children are often bothered with ear ache especially when the plane is losing altitude, 4 1/2 hours to Tenerife in the winter is my limit these days I'm 6ft 2in and arthritis in one knee so the leg room is a big factor for me. :D I imagine it would be. My son in law (or one of them anyway) is...

Re: Up The Creek Without a Paddle

My father's views changed a little bit in the decades after the war. I think as a teenager, he was firmly for king & country. After the war he was too. I think just about everyone in Australia during the second world war was behind the war effort. But during the Vietnam war (which wasn't as clear cu...

Re: Up The Creek Without a Paddle

like the British forces they probably would have preferred to stay at home for the most part, but these things are decided by governments not the man or woman in the street. I think a lot of the people here were totally committed. My uncle went over to Britain to join the RAF. No one forced him, it...

Re: A little tour of Hamilton Island

Pilot, my daughter said the flight just from Melbourne to Hamilton island, which is only 3 or 4 hours, was as long as she could bear with the kids. The older one (just turned 3) got restless and screamed the plane down for the last 10 minutes of the flight there, when forced to put on the seat belt....

Re: Up The Creek Without a Paddle

I said they thought like that. Past tense. Those words came from a first hand report, written by a Jew who lived through it. They don't think like that now. Quite the opposite. The war taught them a lesson. They're not into placating now. Wherever did I say they were a spent force? They are certainl...

Re: Internet trolls.

Please don't lie, Max. In your original post you wrote Tugger. You edited it out after I replied. That word was the whole reason I had replied in the first place. I thought it was hypocritical to write 'don't stoop' then in the same post, have a go at someone. Ironic, if you will. Anyway, I've said...

Re: A little tour of Hamilton Island

They may have had some damage to some of the bungalows, I am not sure. My daughter & family were upgraded from a bungalow to the main hotel, to a room that was $60 a night extra. Mind you, she said having 2 young kids in the same room was a pain as they had to be in the dark themselves by 8pm, light...

Re: Didn't pick a good night to go to Manchester!

I've no doubt it is a dirty business. But that doesn't give these terrorists licence to bomb & behead and attack ordinary citizens.
If they don't like foreign policy, let them stand for election to make changes that way.

Re: Internet trolls.

Max, please look at what JJ asked . Could an intelligent person make baiting posts or bad taste posts on the internet. I replied yes. You're intelligent yet you've made baiting/trolling/abusive/goading posts in the past too. On another post here you also made a joke about Hiroshima and the people wh...

Re: Didn't pick a good night to go to Manchester!

I think he is probably referring to a 19 year old lad and his 17 year old girl friend. They appear to be such a nice couple of kids, its is so very sad that so many innocent people died because of this evil nutcase and his mates. Perhaps this is another example of the consequences of trying to chan...

Ok then, maybe you could give the children in your class a copy of his last 50 posts to study as homework then try and explain to the parents your ambitions for their kids  JJ, it isn't up to teachers to teach people their morality, most of that has to come from home. At my school we tried to ...

Then you stepped in and started abusing, nut. Two things here. I haven't abused you or called you names. Here is part of what I wrote in my 1st response. You've laid down a gauntlet but do you practice what you preach? And does anyone like being called a troll? It's a quick way to insult someone. A...

Re: Up The Creek Without a Paddle

I'd put his experience on the side of luck. :D Most definitely. It's always intrigued me why the world had to have so many more test explosions after the war. I suppose different nations such as France wanted to test their own bombs but we're not just talking the odd test here & there, there were do...

In the eyes of his people he was a hero can't have it both ways can we now.
He was never my hero.
But you're right, one person's freedom fighter is another person's terrorist.
Personally, I classify ISIS as terrorists.
But of course millions don't.
