Re: what do expats miss the most

Nothing. Left 30 years ago and don't return now. Last time I was there I was shocked at how it had gone downhill. People are different too. I'll just keep my memories. Better that way.

Re: Does anyone remember Peter Pino,,

There was a Peter Pino lived at Fellgate in the early eighties with his wife Angela, and their 2 daughters. I think they may still live there. He may have worked for NCB.

Do you remember the Manager in the old South Shields Motor Tax Office? He used to serve at the counter sometimes, along with a couple of young female staff.

Re: Anyone know the name of this well known father & son?

He could well have been the Borough Engineer. I had been thinking along those lines, and had wondered about Chief Surveyor, Architect, or Town Planner.

Re: Thomas Egan born c1852 Galway

There was a John Egan married Elizabeth Brown/Elizabeth Forster at South Shields in 1912. It is to be assumed that Elizabeth Brown was a widow and her maiden name was Forster. There is no record of any other John Egan getting married in South Shields between 1905 and 1920. For births, marriages and...

Anyone know the name of this well known father & son?

They both had the same first name & surname. It was a distinctive name, possibly Scottish. The father was often named in the Shields Gazette possibly in connection with Local Government. The son was a Reporter for BBC Radio Scotland in the eighties. It was a name that could easily trip off the tongu...

John Egan may have been married to a McNulty, and may also have had two sons. Where are all you Egans?

Was it Adams and Gibbons, can remember the pumps where set back inside and an overhead hose on a boom dispensed petrol into cars.
I think there was a Ken Chamberlain at Adams & Gibbon in the seventies.

John Egan, son of Thomas, was born in 1884. He lived in the Commercial Road area of South Shields, and had two daughters probably born around 1920.

Thos Egan born in Galway 1851/1852, married in Corbridge 1878, and then settled in South Shields with his 3 children - Mary, John, and Nora who were all born between 1880 & 1890. I love these photos. Some views of South Shields never change, and bring back so many memories. It must be unusual for swans to be paddling in seawater! Great shots.

I agree with everything you say Larna cheers Bri Reading these boards it does seem that many people are of the same mind about the bad, and the good things, about South Shields. Does anyone from the Planning Department, or Councillors on the Planning Committee, ever read these forums? These matters...

I think if they had kept the shops in keeping with the old buildings above king st would lokk outstanding. I dont think I've ever saw a new building that I actually like, I much more prefer the older style :D Cheers Bri I totally agree. The gaudy plastic signage that is allowed above shops & restau...

Those old bus photos brought back memories. I have not lived in South Shields for many years, but visit occasionally. I have mentioned before at how surprised I am at the lack of pride & dignity people have these days when you walk around the town centre. The people in these old photographs are all ...
