Yeah that's the chap Jimmy, when i compare it to a snipe it seems the more likely candidate. The beak didn't seem as long as a snipes.

Re: Shields Fauna
A Thrush? Def not a thrush, wrong shape, darker colouring and a long thin beak. I saw some kind of warbler in a garden in Dunlop crescent today, it looked most like a garden warbler but they arent resident during the winter. The other half saw a pair of birds that looked similar in our garden yeste...

Re: Shields Fauna
I have, while blundering about the Sunderland Road/Harton House Rd area disturbed a bird from its hiding place on a few occasions. Its a brown/black mottled bird with a long beak, a bit bigger than a blackbird and i tend to happen upon it hiding in hedges and flower beds (the bird, not me). I would ...

http://www.concertina.net/images/bands_bellvue.jpg Apart from Sunderland Rd and Westoe Village are there any other places with houses like that? Belle Vue above the door? I know it was a popular name for houses but it might possibly relate to Belle Vue in Manchester where they held the band competi...

Re: Blackberry picking season
Just got back from the Norfolk Broads and their blackberries are either a different type to ours or are tiny/later ripening.
Got a load from over the back from us but the council saw fit to hack them all down before they were all ready for pickng. Still ive got enough to brew with i reckon.

Over the last couple of days ive spotted: http://www.birdguides.com/i/articles/000225/thumbnail.jpg A waxwing, in a tree next to the Old Ship in Harton. Fairly rare sighting as according to the RSPB only about 100 waxwings overwinter in the UK. http://www.wildaboutkent.com/gallery/albums/game-birds/...

Re: Shield's Bar (NOT about pubs this time)
Spot on Jimmy. SOUTH SHIELDS SALT MAKING Like many other towns in the North East, coal was a major factor influencing the growth of South Shields. For over two hundred years it was used in the process of making salt and in 1768 the town was the site of 200 salt pans. In fact South Shields was once t...

Shield's Bar (NOT about pubs this time)
Could anyone tell me what or where was Shield's/Shields'/Shields Bar? It's mentioned in the lyrics to an old song about press gangs: "Here's the tender coming, pressin' aal the men; Oh dear hinny, what shall we dee then? Here's the tender coming, off o' Shield's Bar, Here's the tender coming, f...

I used to go see daft punk bands upstairs there during the very late 80's/ early 90s and once i also happened to stumble in to the downstair bar where there were young ladies bereft of attire, purely by accident of course.
