Re: Origin of the term 'Sand Dancer'

Heard a long time ago that that the term originated from the days when the local fishermen lived on the beach in dwellings known as "Shiels" and the term "Sandancer" came from the dances that they held on the beach

Re: nook

Re: Brigham & Cowans - mid seventies

Thanks for you comments malaymac, You are of course right about having some incredible memories from conflicts like the Falklands and the first Gulf War. Unfortunately, as you may understand, they are not all good. I remember being daft enough to to stop and take a Photo of an Unexploded bomb that e...

Re: Brigham & Cowans - mid seventies

Was actually a member o...

Strike, let me put YOU right on a couple of things. 1. The Falklands Conflict (SAMA82) was over the invasion of the Falklands 2. The First Gulf War was Initially over the invasion of Kuwait . Neither, at the time, had anything to do with oil, although I'm not blinkered enough to believe it didn't co...

Strike, as I said earlier: your entitled to your opinion, as I am to mine However I'm willing to at least listen to, and partake in a half decent debate as I'm not "blinkered" and don't have to resort to name calling to try and get a point across. As far as risking lives is concerned, I th...

Strike, your entitled to your opinion, as I am to mine, however anyone who can be proud about putting the country onto 3 day weeks, and trying to hold the country to ransom is the traitor as far as I'm concerned From Oxford English Dictionary Traitor:- A person who is treacherous or disloyal to his ...

Its easy for an employer such as the NCB to engineer a strike, then blame the workers I couldn't agree more, swan Hunters used to do it on a regular basis. I was no lover of Scargill but he was proven right in the end, Thatcher said the miners would never be allowed to hold the country to ransom ag...

Sorry guy's but I'm a big thatcher fan. I don't believe that she had anything personal against the miners, after all they chose to go on strike, athough I don't think the same can be said for Scargill. (He made it clear that his aim was to bring down Aunty Maggie) I still believe that at that time t...

It's not that many years ago that Amicus was formed.
Although I can't recall all the unions involved in the merger, one of them was Amalgamated Union of Engineering Workers (or at least that is what it was called when I joined in the 70's)
