Re: Lucy Nurse

Having resolved the original Lucy mystery there is still one missing link in the chain. Lucy's 5th daughter (the first of the bigamous marriage) was also a Lucy- Lucy Sarah b 1881 in South Shields. She married Joseph Hindmarch in 1900 and they had one daughter Marguerite Ivy Bolam Hindmarch (1901). ...

Back down under!

Just back from four weeks with the family in Bega NSW. Had a whale of a time. https://i.imgur.com/mdAdChs.jpg?2 Not particularly good quality but it captures the moment. This is whale watching season along the south coast as the pods travel back from the warmer seas bringing the family back towards ...

Re: Old Cinemas

A long time since this page was opened! Looking at my copy of Cinemas of South Tyneside (D Johnson 1992) I see that the Theatre Royal was used for films from about 1921, but its history as a theatre goes back much further. I recently came across a reference to its origins in about 1866 when the arch...

St Hildas Band

I came across this very tattered old programme from a friend of mine here in Radstock.(Somerset) His dad played in the Radstock Amateur Band and was on the organising committee for the two concerts in the Rectory Gardens at Radstock in August 1924. I guess that it was around this time that the Band ...

Re: Lucy Nurse

At long last a breakthrough. Lucy eventually had four children, all girls. One died in infancy. Lucy then left Anthony and was living with a Robert Sharp (Census 1881) in Jarrow. This appears not to have been his real name as she soon afterwards had another daughter by a Robert Bullen. They were eve...

Peoples History South Shields Scrapbook

I have a copy of the above (published 2000) and have found it extremely interesting. Does anyone know if any other books of a similar nature were published in this series. I understand that the publishers may now have gone out of business but if anyone can help in obtaining copies I would be gratefu...

Re: Henderson Street Westoe

Thanks once again Mr Smith. I did find Stevenson Street this morning on my Godfrey 1/2500 map but even in1896 it looked incomplete.

Re: Iron foundry Hill st/ Nile St

Thanks once again. One last question. When I visited that area in 2002 I took some pictures of the buildings there showing Tyne Tubes Ltd. Would that have been the site? Looking on "Google earth" a few days ago it looked as if the whole site has been cleared but maybe I was not looking at ...

Mr Smith. Can you recall whether Smith's foundry was on the right hand side or left hand side of Nile Street looking towards the river?
