Re: 'Banks of the Tyne Hotel'
Hi Stuart, Sorry the only photo I've got is the one previously posted on this site by Pilot. My great-grandfather William Edington Ray was manager of Banks of the Tyne in the late 1800s, don't know the actual dates though. His other son, grandad's elder brother, was killed when he was playing in Tyn...

Re: Ten more pictures from the past
Great pics Hartman, they really take you back - I was at Vidor 70/71 in the research & development dept., under Derek Brown? If memory serves, I think that was his name.
I also recall I had a good farewell party, I think in the harbour lights pub, up the bank from the riverside factory.

Re: Can anybody explain this ?
Couldn't agree more, "Spare the rod, spoil the child". I remember we got wacked something rotten if we put a foot out of line when I was a kid - it was the norm, and you knew what to expect. I think the PC brigade, and human rights lot threw the bairn out with the bath-water, and now we're...

Re: Can anybody explain this ?
Anna, I can remember the name Carr Elison from when I was a kid 1940/50s, wasn't he big-wig at county level? I remember his name cropping up and being mentioned a lot by teachers, so he must have been someone of influence.

spot-on Anna, these are magnificent shots, I was only in nappies at the time, but they illustrate the horror our parents must have experienced - no wonder they didn't want to talk about it. =D> =D> =D>

Re: Old River Men
They are still about, but don't use boats as much as they used to, inward bound for Newcastle Quay it was the practise to take a line from the foyboat and tow it up to the Quay with the ship. Slow down just below the berth and let them go. Its now more common for the boatmen to drive up to the quay...

Old River Men
The Old Foy-Boatmen I remember watching the Foy Boatmen moving about the river. They had a distinctive method of moving their small boats, standing up in the stern sculling the single oar from side to side and moving the small craft with amazing speed. Their job must have been one of long periods o...

Re: Reflections of an OAP
Many of today's youngsters seem to lack the most basic of social niceties, eg to hear "please" or "thankyou" is rare indeed, it's as if to utter such words would somehow affect their 'Street-Cred'. You do, occassionally, hear them and it restores your faith in humanity. But what ...

Re: Can you remember when............
Remember when it was strange to see a woman in a public bar, when kids said please and thankyou and when foul language was never heard in public. Yes Pete, the common courtesy’s seem to go bye the board these days don't they, same as spitting in public places and spitting gum out onto the pavement ...

Can you remember when kids used to stand-up, and offer their seat to a lady, or elderly person. Some hope today - some of the youngster's seem to think we should stand up and let them have the seat - how times change eh!
