My dad also spent a lot of time hanging around the pilot jetty in the 1940s - his dad was also a captain in the merchant navy!

The war memorial was paid for by the residents of wellington street as many of those named on the memorial lived in wellington street - including one of my relatives. thanks for responses so far - bit more info (though, it makes no sense to me!) shop was apparently an "off-door beer license and general store" and a "tied house to Tucker's Beers" - hope this is useful

grocer in laygate

Does anyone remember a grocer's in palmerston, or south palmerston street in 1950s - was owned at one point by florrie swallwell, taken over by a couple - jimmy and nora and then by a chap called charlie? would love to know where the shop actually was.
