Re: Hospital on the Lawe

There was an Auxiliary Home which was located at either 15 The Lawes or Lawe Road South Shields which was certified for 19 boys and ran until 1931 and had connections with GREENS HOME industrial school, mile end road, south shields, co. Durham.

Re: Barnes Road School

Thanks for the pictures guys, I went to Barnes Road too, passed my eleven plus from there, and played football in the back lanes with Kellan and Pooter as well as Brian Hunter, Malc Newman (partnered to one of my wife's cousins now), Trevor Auty, and Ray Malcolm lived upstairs above me.

Re: Anyone know the name of this well known father & son?

Wasn't Reevel Alderson Director of Environmental Health for South Tyneside Council?
Nice bloke, had lots of dealings with him in the 1980s.

Re: Horsley Hill Stadium

It appears on Durham County Council#s historical maps for 1979, but in 1980 it has been replaced by the Stadium estate, perhaps a good clue?

Horsley Hill Stadium

Anyone know when it was last used for a sporting event?
Dogs?
Football? (I'm guessing 1950)

Anyone know the year it was demolished to make way for the estate?

Re: Two More Down Memory Lane Snapshots

Yet again, this illustrates how much we DON'T like too much change in South Shields, the view today is hardly much different. O.K. King Street is now pedestrianised, but really, what other new developments do you see?

Crikey, really, it's amazing how little the place has changed over the past fifty years!

Re: Family History

And I loved it, despite what these days would be described as hardships. Bonty neet was the best night of the year with on average three bonfires per back lane, a few back doors got burned or blistered but we enjoyed baked potatoes, barbecued sausages, home made soups and even an elementary bread co...

Looks right to me. I was born in the 1950s in John Williamson Street just a few yards away and we often got our knives and scissors sharpened by this fellow.

Use Firefox rather than IE, then add the appropriate Greasemonkey script to download videos from YouTube, Daily Motion, etc. (so I'm told)

Far easier (as far as I have been informed) is to download the albums in .mp3 format via a torrent. Then use Nero or Windows to create an audio CD.

Since Norman Lamont got us out of the ERM, not a single UK politician has been keen on getting us back in to it.
