As a small child I was told by my grandmother that the term comes from the actions of people possibly in the victorian era? (bit lost with the era) dancing and drinking in the open air dance hall ontop of Marsden Rock and then dancing across the sands back to the shore in their ballgowns ect at low ...

Now that brings back memories, we used to stop there as young kids to feed the goldfish with bread on a Sunday on the way to the park, we had to scunch up balls of stale bread and lob them over the fence as it was tucked in the corner behind a few bushes, there was also big goldfish and lots of them...
